DESCRIPTION:Dr. Lance Barrett-Lennard will present Genetic Comparisons of O
rca Populations in the NE Pacific. Some highlights of his research include
showing that at least nine genetically discrete overlapping populations of
killer whales inhabit the northeastern Pacific Ocean. He also showed that r
esident killer whales avoid inbreeding through an elaborate clan-based mati
ng system. His findings have served as the basis for the Committee on the S
tatus of Endangered Wildlife in Canada’s listing of Southern Resident kille
r whales as an endangered population.

DESCRIPTION:Late winter is a time to see marine birds before they begin the
ir journey to the breeding grounds\, but are beginning to go into breeding
plumage. Raptors are seen in abundance and some are already on the nest. Te
rrestrial birds are just starting to tune up their courtship songs. Whether
you want to continue your education as a Naturalist or simply love birds\,
this course provides a great opportunity to learn about identifying birds
in their winter plumage\, groups and species of birds\, their needs\, behav
iors\, and habitats\, as well as migration and population patterns via hand

DESCRIPTION:Did you know that the cold\, green waters of the Salish Sea and
the Northeast Pacific coast are home to one of the largest and least under
stood creatures on the planet? Now known as a ‘gentle giant’ because of its
large size and filter-feeding behavior\, the Basking Shark (Cetorhinus max
imus) in Pacific waters was once greatly maligned for interfering in salmon
fisheries and impeding economic progress. Referred to as ‘clumsy and witho
ut spirit’ and ‘indescribably sinister’\, the Basking Shark was relentlessl
y persecuted and its numbers were reduced from groups of hundreds during th
e spring and summer months to now only a few confirmed sightings a year. Co

DESCRIPTION:
Whenthe nature reserve at Cold Canyon went up in flames—a ca
sualty of California’sraging fire seasons—Robin Lee Carlson</strong

wildfire\, and with a new fireseason on the horizon\, her debut book T

charred landscape and beyond our despairlies another story. Drawing on natu

ly a destroyer\, The Cold Canyon Fire Journals shows us that fire
fitsseamlessly into the natural world’s normal and necessary patterns of ch

DESCRIPTION:
Whales are the largest organisms inthe ocean\, attaining bod
y sizes of more than 100 tons.&nbsp\; When a whale dies\, it usually sinks
to thedeep-sea floor where food is very scarce.&nbsp\;A sunken whale\, or “
whale fall” provides an oasis of food and habitat todeep-sea organisms for
decades. Whale falls support a remarkable diversity ofmicrobes and animals\
, including species that rely on food produced fromchemical energy in sulfi
de\, rather than from sunlight.&nbsp\; Animal communities on deep-sea whale
fallspass through a series of successional stages characterized by mobile
scavengers\, enrichment opportunists\, sulfur-loving species\, and reef spe
cies. These whale-fall communities contain &gt\;100 newly discovered species
! Whalingvastly reduced the abundance of living whales in world oceans\, al
so causing adramatic decline in the abundance of deep-sea whale-fall habita
