Fifty Years in the Antiquarian Book Trade: A Conversation with Ron Randall

Friends of the Lilly Library Annual Meeting

Ron Randall is the proprietor of Randall House, the Santa Barbara bookselling firm he founded in 1979. From 1975 to 1979, Randall was a partner in the firm of Randall and Windle, which he co-founded after spending seven years working for John Howell – Books in San Francisco. However, Randall’s earliest bookselling experiences came long before this, during two summers working in the shipping department of the Scribner Book Store in New York, where Ron’s father, David A. Randall, headed the Scribner Rare Book Depart-ment. One of David Randall’s best customers at Scrib-ner’s was J. K. Lilly, Jr., and that connection eventually led David Randall to Bloomington, where he served as the first director of the Lilly Library.

Ron Randall will speak about his experiences in the book trade, as well as the changes that he has seen in the world of rare books over the last half century.
